Improving health and education are two of the major ways in which we can help lift families out of poverty. Many women and children throughout Africa suffer and die from problems that could be prevented by relatively inexpensive treatment if they were able to access it. We have set up health rooms at both schools and employed a nurse to oversee the children's health. This has had a big impact on the health & well being of not only the children but also the local community. We have introduced regular health lessons, an anti malarial programme supplying mosquito nets to the boarding houses and at a subsidised cost to the community. The teachers from both schools have attended first aid courses and have treated minor complaints in the children.
The nurse is based at Rock of Joy and offers free healthcare to the children and families of the school as well as maternity and family planning services for the local community. She also provides some support for Nansana RPS.
There are a number of children who are HIV positive and families who affected by the impact of HIV/AIDS. Our nurse works with local agencies to identify those at risk and more importantly make sure they get the help and support that they need. Immunisation is one of the most cost effective ways of protecting children's health.
Malaria remains a major cause of illness and death in mothers and young children. Whilst effective prevention and treatment are available in the form of treated mosquito nets and newer anti-malarial drugs many people cannot take advantage of these. We supply subsided nets and educate families in their use as well as providing early diagnosis and treatment of malaria itself. We have introduced a regular programme of Health Education Days for the parents and wider community which are well attended and appreciated.
Currently there are limited healthcare services in Lungujja which houses over 20,000 people. There is no doctor and few people can afford the transport costs to allow them access to the government free clinics. A generous gift from supporters in the Republic of Ireland has allowed us to purchase the building shown above which we plan to convert into a Health House. It is immediately adjacent to the school and was previously a pub!
The land in front of the building was purchased through the generosity of the same group of people and is earmarked as the site of a new Early Years Unit for Rock of Joy.
